What Is DAXXIFY? A Longer-Lasting Approach to Frown Lines and Facial Rejuvenation

DAXXIFY, or daxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm, is an FDA-approved injectable neuromodulator used in adults to temporarily improve moderate-to-severe glabellar lines, commonly known as the “11 lines” between the eyebrows.
Like other botulinum toxin type A treatments, DAXXIFY works by temporarily reducing the muscle activity responsible for dynamic wrinkles.
What has generated significant interest around DAXXIFY is its formulation and, particularly, its duration of effect.
Clinical trials found a median duration of approximately six months for maintaining none-or-mild glabellar lines after treatment, although individual results vary.

What Exactly Is DAXXIFY?
DAXXIFY is a prescription botulinum toxin type A injectable.

Over time, repeated movement can contribute to dynamic facial lines.
Neuromodulators temporarily reduce signaling between nerves and targeted muscles. With less muscular contraction, the overlying dynamic wrinkles can appear smoother.
DAXXIFY was originally FDA-approved in 2022 for the temporary improvement of moderate-to-severe glabellar lines associated with corrugator and/or procerus muscle activity in adults.
What Makes DAXXIFY Different?
One of DAXXIFY’s distinguishing characteristics is its formulation.
DAXXIFY contains daxibotulinumtoxinA and uses a proprietary peptide excipient rather than human serum albumin as an excipient in the formulation.
The peptide-based formulation is one of the technological differences between DAXXIFY and established neuromodulators.
But for patients, the characteristic that tends to attract the most attention is duration.
How Long Does DAXXIFY Last?
This is where the clinical research becomes particularly interesting.
In the pivotal Phase 3 SAKURA 1 and SAKURA 2 trials, 609 adults with moderate-to-severe glabellar lines participated.
At Week 4, approximately 74% of DAXXIFY-treated participants met the trials’ stringent primary endpoint, compared with essentially none of the placebo participants.
Researchers also followed participants to determine how long the response persisted.
The median time that glabellar lines remained rated as none or mild at maximum frown by both investigator and patient assessment was approximately 24 weeks, or roughly six months.
That does not mean every DAXXIFY treatment lasts exactly six months.
Some patients may experience shorter results and others longer. Anatomy, muscle strength, dose, treatment area, metabolism and individual response can all influence the experience.
Still, the approximately six-month median observed in controlled clinical trials is an important part of what distinguishes DAXXIFY.
Does That Mean You Only Need DAXXIFY Twice a Year?
Potentially, but this should not be promised.
If an individual achieves approximately six months of correction, fewer annual appointments may be possible compared with a treatment that wears off sooner.
However, treatment frequency should always be determined individually.
The FDA prescribing information also states that DAXXIFY should not be administered more frequently than every three months.
For someone who values convenience and does not want to schedule wrinkle-relaxing treatments as frequently, duration can therefore be an attractive consideration.
Does DAXXIFY Look Natural?
A neuromodulator does not inherently have to create a “frozen” appearance.
Natural-looking results depend heavily on:
- facial anatomy
- muscle strength and movement
- placement
- dosing
- treatment goals
- injector technique
The objective for many patients is not to eliminate expression.
It is to soften unwanted lines while maintaining a refreshed appearance that still looks like them.
This is why consultation and individualized treatment planning matter as much as the product being injected.
DAXXIFY vs. Botox: Are They the Same Thing?
They belong to the same general category, but they are not the same product and their units are not interchangeable.
Both use botulinum toxin type A to temporarily reduce targeted muscle activity.
However, they have different formulations, approved dosing and clinical trial data.
For FDA-approved treatment of glabellar lines, the labeled DAXXIFY dose is 40 Units divided among five injection sites.
It would therefore be incorrect to compare the number of DAXXIFY units with Botox units on a simple one-to-one basis.
The more useful conversation is not:
“Which one uses fewer units?”
It is:
Which neuromodulator and treatment plan best fit my anatomy, goals, desired duration and previous treatment experience?
Who Might Consider DAXXIFY?
DAXXIFY may be particularly interesting for adults who:
- have moderate-to-severe frown lines
- have previously received neuromodulators
- are interested in a potentially longer duration of correction
- prefer fewer treatment appointments when their individual response permits
- want a nonsurgical approach to dynamic wrinkles
Previous botulinum toxin treatment does not automatically prevent someone from considering DAXXIFY.
An analysis of the SAKURA clinical program found similar efficacy and duration among participants who had previously received botulinum toxin and those who had not.
What Does the Research Say Across Different Skin Tones?
This is an important question, particularly when discussing aesthetic treatments with a diverse North Jersey patient population.
A subgroup analysis of 2,785 patients from the SAKURA clinical program evaluated DAXXIFY across age and racial groups.
At Week 4, more than 96% of patients across the evaluated racial subgroups were rated by investigators as having none-or-mild glabellar lines at maximum frown.
The median duration of none-or-mild severity using the combined investigator/patient measure was 27 weeks among Asian participants, 25.3 weeks among Black and African American participants, and 24 weeks among White participants.
Researchers reported generally consistent efficacy and safety across the evaluated groups.
How Quickly Does DAXXIFY Work?
DAXXIFY is not intended to produce its complete effect immediately after injection.
Clinical studies assessed the primary efficacy endpoint at four weeks, although changes may become apparent earlier.
Patients should allow the treatment time to take effect rather than judging their final outcome immediately after their appointment.
What Are the Potential Side Effects?
DAXXIFY is a prescription medication and should be treated accordingly.
In the FDA-reviewed clinical trials for glabellar lines, the most common adverse reactions occurring in at least 1% of DAXXIFY-treated patients and more frequently than placebo included:
- headache
- eyelid ptosis, or temporary eyelid drooping
- facial paresis, including facial asymmetry
Botulinum toxin products, including DAXXIFY, also carry an FDA Boxed Warning regarding the potential distant spread of toxin effect. Patients should discuss contraindications, medications, medical conditions and potential risks with a qualified healthcare provider before treatment.
DAXXIFY Is Not a Skin-Tightening Treatment
This distinction is particularly important.
DAXXIFY primarily addresses muscle-related dynamic wrinkles.
It does not perform the same function as treatments designed to address skin laxity, texture, volume loss or other components of facial aging.
